Membership FAQ
-
Our vision and our mission are behind every song we sing. If you are considering Rock My Soul choir membership, we ask that you take a moment to consider both and be certain you can commit to them.
-
There are no formal auditions to be part of the choir; all we need is for you to sing up and down the scales to get a sense of your vocal range and place you in the appropriate section (soprano, alto, tenor, or bass). This is done either before or after a rehearsal, and it takes only a couple of minutes. If you wish to attend a rehearsal, please be sure to give us your name, email, and telephone number so we can set up a date for you to visit. You may email us or call 207-450-8016.

Rock My Soul is a volunteer choir with professional standards, but formal experience is not necessary. We are looking for the ability to hear notes and sing them back on pitch, as well as the ability to blend well with other voices and retain memory of parts once they’re taught.
-
No! To respect the oral tradition of roots music, our songs are taught by ear. Sheet music is available for those who read and learn visually, but the ability to read music is not necessary. Our emphasis is on fine-tuning the ability to hear parts and sing them back with the energy and tone appropriate to the song. We find that this method helps members remember and retain their parts in a deeper, more intuitive way so they feel more confident and connected to the songs they sing.
-
Because most of our music is taught by ear, a small, portable recording device is essential. Choir members are expected to practice by listening to their recordings during the week. Most use their mobile phones for this.
-
We sing what is known as roots music, which consists of blues, R&B, soul, slave songs and spirituals, black gospel, Civil Rights songs, Americana, white southern gospel, roots-influenced pop songs, and songs by contemporary roots-based singer/songwriters (think Buddy Miller, the War & Treaty, Levon Helm, and Ruthie Foster, for example). During the holidays, we sing blues, roots, soul, R&B, rockabilly, and doo wop-flavored Christmas music.
-
Every Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 pm, except when on break, which occurs in December and ends at the end of January. We also take breaks the week after each major performance.
-
Roughly 9 to 12 times a year. We hold 2 to 3 concerts in the spring/summer and three during the holidays, and we give smaller, less formal but no less powerful performances in nursing homes, rehab centers, jails, and other locations as part of our charitable outreach.
-
Yes. Usually, breaks occur for 6 weeks during and after the holidays (mid-December through end January), and during the week immediately following each of our four large concerts.
-
For now, we perform mostly in New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts.

Being a soloist with the choir carries high expectations, as well as extra obligations and responsibilities. Members need to be part of the choir for 3 months and need to audition and be approved as a soloist. Please see the Soloist Guidelines and Criteria, which are included in your membership packet, for more information.
-
See the introductory membership information, which follows. Successful completion of the audition is at the sole discretion of the Choir Director and Artistic Committee, taking the musical needs of the choir into account. Successful completion of an audition grants the auditioner opportunities to try out for various songs. If it is determined that a soloist isn't quite ready, the Choir Director will communicate why and offer suggestions for improvement. We foster a nurturing, supportive environment to help members grow into their aspirations and goals with the group.
